Jowar Jaggery Cookies || Millet Flour Cookies

Jowar also known as Sorghum is loaded with fiber which is good for digestive health. It contains magnesium, copper and calcium which helps to maintain strong bones and tissues. It boosts immunity and it  also contain Iron. There are numerous health benefits.

Kids do love enjoy cookies or biscuits because they like the taste and crunch of them. But store bought cookies have All purpose flour(Maida), lots of White Sugar, Refined oil(mostly palm oil) which is not good for their health. Why don't you prepare cookies at home with just few ingredients which are easily available at home? Without any further discussion let us go to recipe details.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Jowar flour - 2.5 cups
  • Jaggery powder - 1 cup
  • Butter - 3/4 cup at room temperature
  • Elachi/ Cardamom powder - a pinch (optional)
  • Baking powder - Half teaspoon
  • Nuts few(I used Almond & Pista)

PROCEDURE:

Take a mixing bowl and add Jaggery powder and Butter using a whisker or a spoon until Jaggery melts and combines with butter. Make sure to keep butter at room temperature so that we can easily combine with Jaggery.

Now add Jowar flour and sieve once while to adding to the Jaggery and butter mixture

Next step is to add Baking powder and Elachi (optional) to the mixing bowl.

Now knead gently using your fingers until it forms a dough.

Using your take a small amount of dough and roll the dough into small balls using your palms and flatten them by pressing both the palms to form a cookie shape.

Place nuts on top of the cookies and press them gently with fingers. I used soaked & peeled almonds and pista.

For baking in oven:

  • Preparation: Preheat the oven to 150 degree C and line the baking tray with butter.  Sprinkle some flour on the tray roll it all over the tray. if you are having parchment paper or butter paper you can them instead of lining the baking tray.
  • Now keep the cookies on baking tray and bake them for 15 to 20 minutes. Do check the oven while baking otherwise they may turn brown.

For baking in stove top:

  • Preparation: Take a large vessel and place a steamer or a rack inside it with lid on, in which you want to make cookies. Preheat the vessel in medium flame for 5 minutes and take a plate in which to place the dough sheets and line with butter & flour as mentioned above.
  • Now place the unbaked cookies on the plate and cook them on stove top 15 minutes in a very low flame. Do have a check in between otherwise they become brown.
  • Make a note that baking/ cooking time depends on the size and number of the cookies you make and also oven / stove flame settings.

When the cookies turn light brown color on the top, it means that they are ready to serve. Store them in a glass jar or an air tight container to prevent from moisture.

Have a great day.. Thank you.
