Horsegram Chat or Salad Recipe

Horsegram is one of the most protein rich lentils. It has a numerous number of health benefits. Adding Horsegram to your diet and to your kids diet can help to increase the daily protein intake.

The recipe I prepared uses very less oil or you can also make this recipe without oil also. This salad / chat is very simple and we can make this in less amount of time.I used boiled Horsegram in this recipe because it is leftover item after making Horsegram Lentil Soup Recipe || Ulavacharu recipe. You can also use sprouted Horsegram in the place of boiled lentils, which is a much more healthy option. You can also check my Horsegram Dosa recipe made with boiled Horsegram.

For making this chat/ salad recipe I used only two kinds of vegetables, you can also include any kind of vegetables that you wish to add. You can also include vegetables like tomato, cucumbers, cabbage etc., in this salad recipe.

Now let us go through the recipe details:

INGREDIENTS:

  • Boiled Horsegram - 2 cups
  • Onion - 1 small size (finely chopped)
  • Carrot - 1 medium size (finely chopped)
  • Oil - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chilies - 1 (as per your taste or spiciness)
  • Curry leaves- few (6-8)
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (or as per your taste)
  • Coriander leaves - few (optional)
  • Lemon - 1 teaspoon (Half a lemon)

PREPARATION:

For making boiled Horsegram, wash and soak Horsegram in water for minimum of 12 hours or overnight. Pressure cook the lentils until you get a minimum of 10-12 whistles. If you want to use sprouted Horsegram add the soaked gram in wet cloth, tie it tightly and leave for minimum of 2 days until you see 1/2 inch long sprouts.

Heat oil in a pan and add Mustard seeds and cumin seeds into the pan. After they begin to splutter, add curry leaves and green chilies.

Now add the boiled Horsegram into the pan and toss them for a while.

Add onion and carrot which are finely chopped and saute them for a minute and add salt.

Switch off the flame and add the lemon juice and give it a good stir. Take the dish into a serving bowl and garnish it with few coriander leaves and our healthy Horsegram salad is ready to be served.
