Horse gram is one of the most protein rich food and contains lot of fiber which aids for better digestion. Horse gram soup is very tasty and healthy. It is power-packed with protein, calcium and iron. It looks similar to chocolate sauce and kids love to have this. Now lets go the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Horse Gram - 400 gm
  • Onion - 1 medium size
  • Tamarind soaked in water - big lemon size
  • Green Chilies - 2 slit
  • Jaggery - 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Salt as required
  • Water as required
  • For Tadka:
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Methi seeds - few (6-8)
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 6 cloves
  • Dry red chilies - 2
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Hing or Asafoetida - a pinch (optional)

 PREPARATION:

  1. Wash Horse gram thoroughly in plain water twice. Soak Horse gram in 1 litre of water, overnight for a minimum of  12 hours.

  2. After soaking, boil the lentils in a pressure cooker along with water soaked and also water if required. Keep in a slow flame and boil for a minimum of 30 minutes or until you get 10 whistles approximately.

  3. After the pressure gets released on its own, open the lid of pressure cooker and you can see water floating on the top. Using a strainer, strain this water and keep it aside. With the leftover Horsegram lentil, we can make Yummy dosas and chat or a salad recipe. For making dosas you check my link Horsegram Dosa recipe  and if you want to make chat or a salad you can check my link Horsegram Chat or Salad Recipe.
  4. Cut down the onion into large pieces and green chilies into slits. Soak tamarind in a cup of water and keep it aside.

  5. Heat half table spoon of oil in a sauce pan and add green chilies, onion and saute for a while or until it until onion becomes translucent.
  6. Now add strained lentil water and cook until it becomes little thick.
  7. Add tamarind pulp and salt as required to the soup. Boil the soup until it becomes even more thick. At this stage, you can add jaggery if required.
  8. For tadka, take another pan and heat 1/2 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. After they splutter, add cumin seeds, methi seeds, garlic, dry red chilies, curry leaves, asafoetida (optional) and turmeric.

  9. Add this tadka to the the soup and switch the flame. Now the soup is ready to be served.

This Horse gram soup goes well with Milk cream along with rice. Believe me, really it will taste amazing!
